Understanding Mental Health Care at Beacon Psychiatry

Struggling with your mental health doesn’t mean something is wrong with you — it means you’re human. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, and dozens of other conditions affect millions of people across every walk of life, every age group, and every background. One in five adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition, yet fewer than half ever receive care. Not because help isn’t available — but because somewhere along the way, too many people were made to feel that what they were experiencing wasn’t serious enough, wasn’t real enough, or was somehow their fault. It isn’t. Mental health conditions are medical conditions, as real and as treatable as any other. They are not personal failures. They are not character flaws. And they do not get better through willpower alone — they get better through proper care, the right support, and a team that genuinely understands what you’re going through.

If you’ve ever wondered whether what you’re feeling is “serious enough” to ask for help — the answer is yes. You don’t have to be in crisis to deserve care. You don’t have to have all the words for what you’re experiencing. You just have to be willing to take one step toward feeling better.

At Beacon Psychiatry, we provide compassionate, evidence-based, personalized treatment for a wide range of psychiatric conditions — from the first signs something feels off to the ongoing support that helps you stay well. We treat patients of all ages, from children and adolescents navigating life’s earliest challenges to adults and seniors facing what each new season brings. Whether you’re seeking answers for the very first time, finally ready after years of wondering, or simply looking for a team that will truly stay with you for the long haul — we are here.

And we are so glad you found us. No matter what you’re carrying, or how long you’ve been carrying it, we are ready to help you put some of it down.

Therapy Services

Our licensed therapists offer evidence-based individual, family, and couples therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Sessions are available in person and via telehealth.

Identifies and restructures negative thought patterns.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most widely researched and effective forms of psychotherapy available. CBT works by helping you identify the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors — and teaching you how to interrupt and reshape patterns that are keeping you stuck. Rather than focusing solely on the past, CBT is practical and present-focused, giving you concrete tools you can use in everyday life. It is effective for depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, and many other conditions.

Resource:

Builds emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder but has since proven effective for a wide range of conditions involving emotional dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and interpersonal difficulty. DBT teaches four core skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The word ‘dialectical’ refers to the balance between two seemingly opposite goals — accepting yourself as you are while also committing to change. DBT is structured, skills-based, and highly practical.

Resource:

Practical, goal-oriented approach to resolving current challenges.

Solution-Focused Therapy is a short-term, forward-looking approach that shifts the focus from what is wrong to what is possible. Rather than spending extensive time analyzing the origins of a problem, Solution-Focused Therapy helps you identify your strengths, your past successes, and the specific steps that will move you toward the life you want. It is particularly effective for patients who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about where to begin — and for those who want to see practical results relatively quickly.

Resource:

Supports behavior change and treatment engagement.

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, conversational approach designed to strengthen a person’s own motivation and commitment to change. Rather than telling you what to do, your therapist acts as a guide — helping you explore your ambivalence, clarify your values, and connect your goals to the changes you want to make. Motivational Interviewing is especially effective for substance use, treatment resistance, health behavior change, and any situation where a part of you wants to change but another part isn’t sure. It meets you exactly where you are.

Resource:

Evidence-based treatment for OCD.

Exposure and Response Prevention is the gold-standard, most evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. ERP works by gradually and safely exposing you to the thoughts, images, or situations that trigger your obsessions — while helping you resist the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors in response. Over time, your brain learns that the feared outcome does not occur, and the anxiety associated with the trigger naturally decreases. ERP requires courage, but it produces lasting results that medication alone cannot achieve. Our therapist has completed intensive specialized training in this modality.

Resource:

For trauma and PTSD recovery.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is a structured, evidence-based treatment specifically designed for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Developed by Dr. Edna Foa at the University of Pennsylvania, PE works by helping you gradually and safely revisit traumatic memories and situations you have been avoiding — in a controlled, supportive therapeutic environment. Rather than keeping you trapped in a cycle of avoidance that maintains PTSD symptoms, Prolonged Exposure helps your nervous system process what happened so that the memory loses its power to control your daily life. It is one of the most effective treatments for PTSD recognized by the VA, the APA, and the Department of Defense.

Resource:

Tailored formats for diverse needs.

Not all therapy looks the same — and it shouldn’t. Individual therapy offers a private, one-on-one space to work through personal challenges at your own pace. Family therapy brings loved ones into the process, addressing relationship dynamics, communication patterns, and shared challenges that affect the whole family system. Couples therapy focuses on the relationship itself — helping partners rebuild trust, improve communication, navigate conflict, and reconnect. At Beacon Psychiatry, we offer all three formats, and your therapist will help you determine which approach — or which combination — is right for your situation.

Resource:

Uses mental imagery and relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and support emotional healing.

Visualization, also known as Guided Imagery, is a mind-body technique that uses the power of focused mental imagery to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and support emotional and physical healing. By engaging your imagination in a structured, intentional way — picturing calming scenes, successful outcomes, or feelings of safety and strength — Visualization helps calm the nervous system and shift the brain out of stress response. It is often used alongside other therapeutic modalities to enhance their effectiveness and is particularly helpful for anxiety, chronic stress, performance anxiety, pain management, and building self-confidence.

Resource:

A non-directive, empathy-driven approach that trusts each patient's capacity for self-understanding and personal growth.

Developed by psychologist Carl Rogers, Person-Centered Therapy is built on a profound and simple belief: that every person has within them the capacity for growth, healing, and self-understanding — and that the right therapeutic relationship can unlock it. Rather than directing or advising, your therapist creates a warm, non-judgmental space defined by three core qualities: empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness. In that environment, many people find that they are able to access insights, clarity, and self-compassion that they couldn’t reach on their own. Person-Centered Therapy is woven into the fabric of how we approach every patient relationship at Beacon Psychiatry.
